Real Conversations: Latoya, Ashley and Je’Nein – Part 3 of 3

Creating Value, Transferring Knowledge into Job Skills

Ashley and I have sat up many a night hashing out how to reach the communities in Wards 7 and 8.  We recognize that there is a lack of value for using and accessing the internet.  Many people in these Wards are not able to answer the question:  WIIFM?  (What’s in it for me?)  This has been a major challenge with this project.  How do we create value and connect the dots?  People understand the social and entertainment value of this new medium.  However, they don’t understand how it translates into jobs and opportunities, or even citizenship for that matter.

Latoya, Ashley and I go one more round!

Ashley:

latoya real quick while im thinking

what do u think

Latoya:

ummhmm

Ashley:

or are your thoughts

about

engaging people that just aren’t motivated about digital literacy and its important

*importance

Me:

lot of that in our wards

Latoya:

a lot of folks need to see it to believe it

and I don’t blame theme

*them

these are abstract concepts

you can’t eat the internet

you can’t touch it

Me:

wear it

Latoya:

you can find porn, but you can’t have sex with it

what does it have to do with day to day life

folks who have been in this a while forget that

so

Ashley:

right bc its so natural for us

Latoya:

I try to break it up into usefulness and potential

Ashley:

gotcha

bc we have gotten some resistant folks

Latoya:

of course

I wouldn’t expect anything less

we can’t afford to assume that everyone sees diversity as a good thing

Ashley:

just shining an ipod or flip in someone’s face just isn’t always enough or saying that we want to bring technolgoy to the area

Latoya:

look at Glenn Beck and them

Ashley:

people are like “and”

Latoya:

some folks are inherently mistrustful of things that are different

Ashley:

what’s good on a job

Latoya:

right

so we put in the value add

Ashley:

but how do we show that value

Latoya:

did you know – Swizz Beats uses this program

Me:

what program?

Latoya:

Garage Band

so does T-Pain and NIN

Ashley:

Right

Me:

really??

Latoya:

Yes

Ashley:

that would be a cool component to the conference

Latoya:

I learned it at the apple store

Ashley:

girl u can go and do what tpain does right from your mac

Latoya:

As a matter of fact

Ashley:

pmc autotune

Me:

Do you think it’s possible to get a buy in from someone known to donate their time??

Latoya:

Jay Z bought a beat from garage band and used it for Umbrella

Me:

This really could become a movement!

Latoya:

and Nine Inch Nails releases some of their tracks on the internet in garage band format so people can remix

Me:

with the right people involved.

Latoya:

Yes

so we tap into things people like to do

Me:

Right

Latoya:

and show them how they make money

gossip bloggers

Ashley:

i like that

Latoya:

have access to celebrities

and make money

Ashley:

right the girl from bossip, not that it’s the best, but started it in college

Latoya:

the YBF puts up six figures

sorry, seven

Ashley:

Crazy

Latoya:

and it’s just pictures of celebs on a blog

Me:

question:

Latoya:

Gabi Fresh

the MTV VJ winner

was a blogger first

and won 100,000

and her dream job

and interviews people like Solja Boy

so

Me:

question:

Latoya:

showing that there are a lot of paths to what people want in life

and the net facilitates that

what’s up J

Ashley:

dude u need to teach a new media class

Latoya:

lol

I;m still learning

Me:

so how much time do we spend on this part?  Do we use this info as bait to draw them in so that we don’t keep them thinking at the same level of understanding?

Latoya:

yes

I would bill it as “the secrets to making millions”

because everyone can identify rappers and such

but people don’t know that it’s the nerds with the equipment making them go

one of the workshops I want to develop for this

takes the idea of glamour jobs

then goes behind the camera

and shows all the support team

who are still being paid

and how tech has helped that

so I can talk about the make up bloggers

who just used videos to show their skills

and how they get TV shows and book deals and contracts

Me:

Nice…

Ashley:

how do u plan on recruiting

Latoya:

or B. Scott

flyers

Ashley:

i know our plan would do some of tht

Latoya:

old school style

Ashley:

but will it be open to all

Me:

How about some other industries as well?

Ashley:

or will “class” fill up

Me:

Like real estate.

Latoya:

Always

Me:

Shooting videos of houses for virtual tours.

Latoya:

there was a big spread in Black Enterprise

not too long ago

about how a real estate agent pushed her self into 7 figures

by upping her tech game

Latoya:

there is literally a 1000 possibilites

Me:

Coolness!Alright ladies!

Ashley:

Ok cool!

Me:

Let’s take over the world just to say we did!

Ashley Mosley has left.

Me:

TTYL!

Latoya Peterson has left.

Author’s Note:  For the most part, I left in spelling errors, chat language and English dialects to maintain the essence of the conversation. I also didn’t edit out much for the following reasons.

1. I want you to experience the diversity in our personalities.
2. I also want to point out how new media can connect people from around the world. Ashley was in Italy on vacation. Latoya was in DC and I was in Maryland.
3. That said, I also wanted to share our dedication to this project. We have jokes! But more importantly, we have passion.
