Real Conversations: Latoya, Ashley and Je’Nein – Part 1 of 3

The Plan, Sustainability and a Vay-Cay in Italy

I’ve found another way to capture conversation:  chat.  You’d be surprised at what a powerful medium it is.  Below I have included a conversation involving my sister fellows Latoya Peterson and Ashley Mosley.  I divided it into three parts. (Click here to read Part 2 and Part 3.) We came together (virtually) to discuss our plan for the pitch to the Public Media Corps Advisory Board.  We hash our many ideas about the best way to reach the underserved community.  For the most part, I left in spelling errors, chat language and English dialects to maintain the essence of the conversation.  I also didn’t edit out much for the following reasons.

  1. I want you to experience the diversity in our personalities.
  2. I also want to point out how new media can connect people from around the world.  Ashley was in Italy on vacation.  Latoya was in DC and I was in Maryland.
  3. That said, I also wanted to share our dedication to this project.  We have jokes!  But more importantly, we have passion.

Me:

Are you still there? LOL!

Okay….that’s funny

Ashley:

what is

is latoya here

Me:

The whole screen just changed!

Ashley:

mic check

i know right

Me:

1, 2, 1, 2!

Ashley:

girl u gotta be careful with this stuff

Me:

oh yeah!  Let Me text her right quick

Latoya:

huh

wait what happened?

Ashley:

jenine invited u into this chat

Me:

Good morning Sunshine!

I think this might be the best tool PMC has given us yet!

So Latoya we were talking about the pros and cons of collapsing the project.

Latoya:

I mean if y’all aren’t into a collapse, that’s cool

Ashley:

i’m pretty open/down for it

Latoya:

we can still partner projects

Ashley:

i think it would make it stronger

how do u guys plan on rolling it out

you and britt

Latoya:

workshops

first

then

Ashley:

bc i was sort of looking at ours as the recruitment/awarness phase

Latoya:

lead to

big summit

ok knowledge

end

Ashley:

and then we plug people into what y’all are doing

so would the workshops be weekly

Sent at 9:11 AM on Thursday

Ashley:

can u guys see this

internet might be weird

Latoya:

yup

so you want to partner the townhalls

as a lead in to the workshops?

is that correct

Ashley:

pretty much

i kinda looked at it structured as if we are sort of doing recruitment for u guys

i guess if that makes sense

Sent at 9:14 AM on Thursday

Me:

It makes sense.

I’m concerned about what it will sound like to the PMC/Advisory board.

Latoya:

?

Me:

Do we need a backup plan?

They may see it as being too big…a lot to do in a short period of time.

Just saying.

Latoya:

i say go big or go home

Ashley:

pretty much

i mean we have to create the value

Me:

Okie dokie.  I’m in!

Ashley:

for digital literacy

Me:

I agree.

Ashley:

question: for the workshops,

what resources would u guys need to run them? computers, flip cams, etc

have u thought about where they will be held – the same locations- rotational

or have we not gotten that far

Me:

We talked about resources yesterday.

Ashley:

I’m just wondering what they can afford to support

Me:

We have to find out where they are.  May need to put together a budget for a mobile media cart

Latoya:

Yeah

Me:

I have one question. Sustainability?

Latoya:

on the workshops?

or your townhalls?

Me:

Are we concerned with that for this type of project?

both.

Ashley:

Well

Latoya:

many of the workshops will be train the trainer/downloadable video/downloadable curriculums

Ashley:

the hardcore projects won’t be sustainable

but the knowledge

Latoya:

that we will wrap into the PMC site once it’s over

Ashley:

they receive will be

Me:

Maybe we can put together a digital media kit on the site for organizations to downlaod and use.

Ashley:

yeah i agree. i mean if you equip somoene to go back into their community it begins to create an ecosystem

Sent at 9:20 AM on Thursday

Ashley:

so do you want us to do our write up and send it over so to merge the two

Latoya:

I say we present them seperately

because Me and brittany’s will cost more cash

so it has a higher chance or rejection

Ashley:

Ok

Me:

do you think ours would add value to yours?

in connecting the dots.

Even though it costs more, might they see the need for the entire program?

Ashley:

that’s what i was thinking.

Me:

u there L?

Ash?

Ashley:

im here

Me:

okay…maybe she stepped away for a moment!

Latoya:

Back

Me:

cool.

Ashley:

latoya question

Latoya:

??

Ashley:

would your project work

Latoya:

sup Ash

Ashley:

if they needed to scale it down

let’s say to just a bootcamp

or is it designed to be a continuous roll out

Latoya:

well, there are different scales

private, targeted camps vs. public

a 3 site conference, vs. a 6 site, vs. a 12 site conference

etc

not sure if all the adults could commit to a bootcamp though

Sent at 9:30 AM on Thursday

Ashley:

that sounds cool!

well let’s present them under one umbrella

with separate write ups

so that they understand that ours is the first-phase tht feeds into yours

bc we have to do some sort of formal training in the community

Me:

I agree!

I believe it will be easier once we have the UN forum.

Maybe we should call it the United Neighbor forum!

Ashley:

that would be fun!

and cute

Latoya:

that works

Ashley:

sounds good

jenine are u or olivia presenting ours?

im traveling to rome tomorrow but i might be able to connect in around 11

your time

Latoya:

Ashley’s on a roman holiday…

Me:

LOL!

Latoya:

how Hepburn.
