I embarked on the journey of creating a television series that captured the voice of a demographic in DC that is often voiceless.
I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. However with increasing youth violence and high STD/STI rates someone needs to talk to our youth.
I coordinated focus groups to connect with students. In the past 3 weeks I’ve encountered some of DC most gifted teens.
The students and I discussed what the show should include to be a true reflection of their demographic. As the conversation evolved we discussed the issues that they considered important.
Sex, Sex, and more Sex was the topic that C.C. suggested.
C.C. is a student that participates in the after school program at Centro Nía. According to her having sex and conceiving a baby has become the new trend; which is a result of low self esteem.
Some topic suggestions were outlandish but others like the example C.C. suggested were representative of their community.
Every student I encountered was excited to hear about the creation of the television show.
“¿What’s Good DC?” will be a 30 minute segment that will be hosted by two Howard University students and two guests from PMC partner schools. Each segment will address topics like School Reform, Violence, Drugs etc. Students that are unable to attend will be able stream the show live and post comments; then continue the conversation via Facebook and Twitter. Local artists will provide the entertainment for the show.
With so many elements to the show, my team and I’ve been working long hours to make it a success. We are excited about its potential and impact.
So, let the planning continue!
