Getting To Know the Kids at Garfield Terrace

0 Comments 10 September 2010

Destiny is shy. Myana and Tyana are twins who seem mature beyond their 11 years old. John is incredibly talented at drawing and wants to be a famous artist when he grows up. All of these students who come through the doors at Garfield Terrace have something to say. They are friends, they share stories, and even though they may be reluctant to admit it, seem genuinely happy to have a place to go for fun.

Gabe’s H.E.L.P workbooks (Hip-Hop Educational Literacy Program) continue to engage the students. One of the lessons I watched was a discussion about a T.I. song. Deconstructing the lyrics (which Gabe does after the actual song is played) is a great exercise in reading comprehension.

Most students use Facebook. None use Twitter. Getting them to use social media that they develop is a bit more challenging. They enjoy being videotaped, and seeing themselves on-line, but aren’t as interested in creating.

But, that could change. They do seem interested in learning, if given the right incentive.
